See all 10 photos. Once upon a time, when the Chevy Corvette still located its engine in its nose, it offered an appealing in-between performance trim. The C7 Corvette Grand Sport brought wider fender flares, suspension upgrades, and other performance goodies—essentially marrying the format of the more powerful Z06 with the entry-level Corvette Stingray's LT1 V-8 engine.

Sources from within GM apparently told GM Authority that the blank space between the "base" Corvette as if you could consider the entry-level C8's spicy performance "basic" and the expected Z06 model will instead be filled by the E-Ray hybrid. The long-expected E-Ray is anticipated to use the Corvette Stingray's 6. And yes, the E-Ray's layout would also upgrade the C8 from rear- to all-wheel drive.

There's no telling at this moment how much power the Corvette E-Ray might make, but it'll likely be more than the regular hp C8.

Figure on somewhere around to hp, which would fit the E-Ray neatly between the Stingray and the Corvette Z06 's expected hp-plus output. The Z06, by the way, will also get a special flat-plane-crankshaft V-8 that ditches pushrods for an overhead cam setup.

Beyond that, the Corvette lineup will likely sprout a ZR1 with a twin-turbo version of the Z06's engine, along with a 1,hp "Zora" hybrid model that combines the E-Ray's electric motors with the ZR1's turbocharged twin-cam, flat-plane-crank V So, while the Grand Sport seemingly won't make it back into the Corvette lineup, the E-Ray that takes its place soon, we suspect, though the timing is hazy will serve as the bridge between the current Stingray and the wilder models to come in the emerging C8 family.

Watch Before Buying C8 Corvette

It's a silver lining in the production storm that battered the launch of the C8 that was reimagined as a mid-engine sports car after 50 years of longing by Vette enthusiasts. It will be a standalone option, even on the base model, says Tadge Juechter, executive chief engineer for the Corvette. Customers will be able to order the C8s in late July.

That led to reports that the price would have to be hiked for the second model year. GM was losing money on low-trim cars and hoping to make it up on higher trims and options. But the events of have put the price hike on hold.

Surprise! 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Won’t Get Price Hike

Historically we hike the price in the second year, when the car is still hot, but we're not going to do that, Juechter said. While the has only been on sale a few months, it is leading its albeit-small segment.

Of the 20, total orders for the model, 83 percent of demand is for the coupe; 17 percent for the convertible, said Corvette Product Manager Harlan Charles. Breaking down coupe orders, the 3LT is most popular with 44 percent of orders, followed by the 2LT at 40 percent and 1LT at 16 percent.

For interiors, jet black is the most requested, followed by black and red two-tone. Here's what happened: GM was building out the previous-gen C7 last fall when failure to reach a new labor agreement with the United Auto Workers resulted in a strike that halted assembly for six weeks.

When workers returned to work in late October, they had to finish final orders for the outgoing front-engine Vette. Then the Bowling Green plant had to be idled for a couple weeks to retool to make the dramatically different eighth-generation car. Instead of starting production in December —by which time the car had already sold out —the first Stringray coupe rolled off the line Feb. Convertibles were to be added to the mix in April. Then came the global pandemic, and by March GM had shut down production around the world.

Many would-be Corvette owners were back to waiting. Corvette production resumed in Kentucky on May 26 on a single shift and is slowly ramping up. When it is safe to do so, the second shift will resume, as well. All this made it impossible to build a full supply of models.

GM will extend production of the Stingray through the fall and add convertibles to the line this summer. By holding the price for those who will be offered a model instead, GM is essentially providing a two-year launch period and ensuring prospective buyers don't go away empty-handed.

Customers will be updated on the status of their individual orders in the next couple weeks. There is a Corvette concierge they can call for updates, as well. Chevy will reach out to those whose orders won't be filled when there is a better idea of how many will get built before the changeover to the new model year.

The convertible will be added to the line this summer, although the specific date is not finalized because the plant just came back online and is feeling its way through a relaunch under new safety protocols.

Juechter wouldn't say how many additional Corvettes will be built, or the split between coupes and convertibles. After years of waiting for the mid-engine Corvette to make its debut, the pressure was on for Chevrolet to deliver a modern-day icon. As the C8-generation car enters its second model year, we are happy to report that its status is preserved—in fact, it's elevated. The Corvette earned a 10Best award forand the model offers the same impressive performance, the same hp V-8 engine, and the same affordable base price.

Both a coupe and a convertible are offered, and the Corvette's two-seat cabin is spacious and comfortable for full-size adults. Beyond its spectacular performance, Chevy's engineers made the ride supple enough for daily commuting and cross-country road trips, yet with the Z51 package the Vette is track-capable.

Cargo space is limited, but golf clubs still fit in the back, and the front trunk frunk offers a deep well that'll easily hold a carry-on suitcase. Despite holding steady on the Corvette's pricing forChevrolet has added a few standard featuresincluding wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, new options for the digital gauge display, and a Buckle-to-Drive safety feature that prevents the standard automatic transmission from shifting out of park until the driver has buckled their seat belt.

C8 Chevy Corvette Z06 Will Have 600-Plus HP and a Ferrari-Like Shriek

On top of that, any Corvette can now be ordered with the optional magnetorheological dampers as a standalone option; previously, to get them you'd have to purchase expensive Z51 performance package. Cosmetically, a new Full Length Dual Racing Stripe package is available, with stripes in blue, orange, red, or yellow.

A new gray-and-yellow interior color scheme has also been added to the options sheet. The Corvette is available as either a coupe or a convertible with a folding hard top.

Since the coupe's roof lifts off for open-top motoring anyway, we'd stick with it. The Z51 performance package is also a must-have as it brings all of the Corvette's best performance-oriented gear. Although the engine is in a new location—now behind the passenger compartment instead of in front of it—it remains a 6.

With the dual-mode performance exhaust that is part of the Z51 package, it makes horsepower. The Z51 option also adds an electronic limited-slip rear differential, more aggressive brakes, and summer tires. An eight-speed dual-clutch automatic a Corvette first is the sole transmission. It is controlled either by a push-button gear selector on the center console or by using two large steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles.

A manual transmission is not available. In our testing, we recorded a zero-tomph time of 2. We managed a braking distance of feet from 70 mph and recorded 1. Even in base form, however, the new Corvette is capable of heroic handling and delivers big thrills on both road and track.

The Corvette earns EPA fuel economy ratings of 15 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined. We subjected it to our own mile highway fuel-economy test and recorded 26 mpg, 1 mpg less than expected. The Corvette brings several small updates and changes to the nameplate, including the addition of two new exterior paint optionsnamely Red Mist Tintcoat and Silver Flare Metallic, as well as the deletion of Long Beach Red Metallic Tintcoat and Blade Silver Metallic from the C8 exterior paint options list. The latest Corvette will also offer new exterior racing stripe options and a new interior color combo, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

However, due to the production delays incurred this year and insome of the orders for the model year have been pushed back to the model year. Additionally, some of the options are now more expensive with the Corvette, including the Z51 Performance Package, Front Lift Suspension, and 5-Trident Spoke Black-Painted Aluminum wheels, which means those customers who have had their orders pushed back will pay more for those specific options compared to pricing for model-year vehicles.

Yes, Excited!!!!! I hope by June of I was bumped from also getting the 1st at my dealer. I placed my C8 order on yes…one year ago. My dealership expects my car to arrive in June-July. Not happy paying more for a C8 I already ordered. I have been pushed back to C8 coupe, silver flare metallic, adrenaline red seats, 2 LT, Z51, GT2 seats, front lift, edge red calipers, edge red engine cover, engine appearance package, ext side composite rockers, carbon flash painted mirrors and rear spoiler and gray trident spoke wheels.

Would be a miracle to receive it by Christmas. I ordered August 18, and was push back to a Number 6 out of 13 and the first 5 were picked up before this Fakedemic hit. And at this pint i would rather get a 21 in early 21 than a 20 in November.

But when the factory lost work weeks over the strike and then again over the virus ,there are just unseen circumstances that cannot be planed for. I ordered C8 early January and have had to replace that order with model order.

Not happy about delays and price increases but candidly I would probably just be getting my original order about now so it would be sitting in the garage mostly due to COVID restrictions on activities.

I am now looking forward to delivery probably in the late Spring timeframe. Seriously wish GM would get off their ass and update the C8 Build to Order online to the stuff since they are done with taking orders anyway. Very annoying. Now they think that they will achieve this goal by November 16th. As of September 8, they have to produce 10, cars.GM never offered a Corvette police car from the factory, although some U.

With the mid-engine Corvette C8 in production sinceyou may wonder what are the odds of GM changing its mind and finally releasing a police version. Police departments and law enforcement agencies across the country would have a hard time explaining a purchase like that.

With that in mind, the only way we can see a mid-engine Corvette police car happening is if the automaker donated one to be used as a high-profile pursuit vehicle or for transporting blood and organs. Until that happens, you can get a pretty accurate idea of what a Corvette police car would look like courtesy of these renderings from Aksyonov Nikita. All Rights Reserved.Chevrolet is already preparing to launch the next model year of the C8 Corvette. Orders for the car have been halted, and allocations for the model-year Corvette will start in late May. And according to official dealer documents leaked on the C8 Corvette Owners Facebook Groupit's getting some significant updates.

Facebook user Aaron Bradlee Adams, who, according to their profile on the social network, works at a Chevrolet dealer in Michigan, shared a screenshot outlining the changes coming to the model-year Corvette. The information was apparently sourced from the Global Connect Order WorkBench, a dealership software used for ordering cars.

The biggest update is the addition of two new color choices: red Mist Tintcoat and silver Flare. The document also shows that Magnetic Ride Control has been made a standalone option for —previously, you had to order the Z51 performance package to get it.

Wireless CarPlay will apparently be made standard across the Corvette lineup. Another standout addition is the availability of a "Stingray R" graphics package, though the document doesn't explain what it entails.

Corvette Blogger speculates the design could replicate that of the C8. R race car. Chevy seems to be bringing back the race car-themed car coveralso seen on the C7.

There's a handful of cosmetic changes listed on the leaked document as well, including new available stripe patterns and colors, new interior designs for the 3LT trim level, and available carbon fiber exterior pieces. Join Now.

That has been pretty much set in stone. Even those that have been ordered before might not even be made because of the production difficulties due to the coronavirus pandemic. If you want to own the first mid-engine Corvette, your best option is to place an order for a model year, but that on itself poses another challenge — that's if you don't like waiting.

According to Mike, the Chevy Dude, you will need to wait for 12 to 18 months if you order for a Corvette C8 today. That's because of the minimal production weeks left this year for the MY Vette, which Mike estimates to be at around six weeks, considering the three-week plant shutdown for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New year.

And that's if production for the Corvette starts by November 2, which Mike debunked on the video above. While this date has been around the rumor mill, the Chevy Dude said that GM is yet to announce a final confirmation.

What can you expect from the Corvette, anyway? The former will replace the existing Long Beach Red paint option. There will also be body stripes in a multitude of colors made available. Plus, wireless Apple CarPlay will be standard across the range.
